Car Shipping Estimate | Car Shipping Prices

Finding a car shipping estimate can be simple, however the huge range in prices can make it very confusing.  A common mistake that people make is getting the prices from a variety of companies and then taking the cheapest of the car shipping prices.  There is nothing wrong with getting a good deal; nobody wants to pay any more than is necessary to get their car moved.  Unfortunately for customers, some companies choose to give very low estimates in order to “win the business” but then later find out they underbid the job.  Of course, it is not always the intention of the companies to underbid the car shipping estimate, but often multiple non-reputable companies compete against each other, and they try to beat the other company’s prices.  Generally this happens with companies who are very new to the industry or do not have concern for their reputation.  Below are a few tips to factor in along with the car shipping estimate.

Do they want an upfront deposit?

This should be a concern for you right away.  The reason this is a red flag is that often the companies that require an upfront deposit are concerned about their ability to find a company to actual ship your car.  Often this is a result of them underbidding the price to you, so they will charge a deposit and if later you want to cancel, they will keep that deposit as a “cancelation fee.” Of course this is not the case with every company, but often it is an issue we regularly hear.  If you choose not to cancel, they may ask you to pay an additional amount because they accidentally underquoted you the price, and since they already have $150 from you, you are less likely to walk away.  In this manner, a lot of these companies are able to stay afloat, getting paid for misleading customers.  Generally speaking these companies have numerous complaints on the Better Business Bureau or are “new” in the industry.  The reason we say, “new” is because it is a common practice for companies to shutdown and open up under a new name to wipe away complaints.

Do they offer a variety of discounts or quickly lower the price to close the deal?

If a company gives you a car shipping estimate of $900 and then you ask for a better price and immediately they say $825 it is something you should be concerned about.  First of all, why are they giving up $75 so easily and why did they not give that price to you at the start?  Some companies will give discounts to make you commit to them and pay them because it is a “buy now” or the deal will not be available later.  The issue is that typically brokers are not going to lower the amount they want to make, but will simply try to get the driver to take it for less...and this can backfire and your car never get loaded.
